FAQ
What can the Language Workshop help me with?
The tutorials at the Language Workshop are an opportunity for you to develop your academic language skills. Our aim is to help you help yourself. We will read some parts of your text and then discuss them together with you. You can then use the advice you were given during the tutorial to continue to develop the text on your own.
Can the Language Workshop proofread my text?
No, we never proofread texts.
Can I book appointment even if I don’t have a finished text?
Yes. You are welcome to visit the Language Workshop when you are just getting started on an assignment even if you have not begun writing it yet. We can discuss the writing process or the assignment itself, for example.
Can the Language Workshop grade my assignment?
No. A visit to the Language Workshop does not guarantee that you will get a passing grade. It is your department’s job to grade your work. We only have a supportive role in helping you to improve your writing or speaking skills.
What if I need extra support?
Our goal is to help you. If our tutorials are not enough, we will suggest other kinds of support. We may offer advice on other resources or courses that may be of use to you, for example.
Can I get help writing a CV or cover letter?
No, we only offer help with assignments that you do as part of your course work at Uppsala University. You can contact UU Career for help with job applications. PhD students can get support from the university’s Research Coordinators.
Are the services provided by the Language Workshop always free?
Yes, the tutorials and lectures offered by the Language Workshop are always free of charge for students and employees at Uppsala University.
I am a student at a different university. Can I visit the Language Workshop at Uppsala University?
No, but most Swedish universities have their own Language Workshops or Writing Centres that you can turn to for help.
Can I have an online tutorial?
Yes. We offer both drop-in sessions and online tutorials by appointment via Zoom.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
Please let us know as soon as possible if you need to cancel your appointment. In order to offer the appointment to someone else, we need to be notified at least two days in advance.
Students who repeatedly miss their appointments without cancelling them or who cancel appointments late (without a good reason) will not be offered further tutorials at the Language Workshop.
