Courses in English
During the fall term of 2023 the Language Workshop at Uppsala University will offer two courses in English for international students. Both courses are primarily intended for so-called free movers (see below) and international PhD students. Exchange students will be accepted if there are spaces available.
The courses are free of charge and students who finish a course will receive a course certificate, but no course credits.
Please note that in order to participate in either one of the courses, students must sign up with the teacher, and that it is not possible to audit these courses without participating. You cannot take both courses during the same semester.
Courses for international students
Communicating in English: Academic Writing
Course aims: This course aims to provide students with basic skills of academic writing, including how to structure a text, how to use references, and how to provide constructive peer feedback.. Another important aim of the course is to make visible the often implicit and opaque rules and expectations of academic culture, including academic integrity and critical thinking.
Target group: This course is primarily intended for international students who are so-called free movers. Free movers are students who have not come to Uppsala University through an exchange program. The course is open to students on the undergraduate and Master’s levels, and to PhD students. Students must be registered at Uppsala University (including Campus Gotland) in order to take the course.
Language prerequisites: There are no language prerequisites (apart from those necessary to be admitted to the university). Students who find it very difficult to understand spoken English are advised to contact the teacher before applying to the course.
Course format: This course consists of 7 meetings (1/every week or every other week, on either Mondays or Tuesdays, from 6:15 pm to 8:00 pm). The course will be offered both online (via Zoom) and on campus in Uppsala (one group each). Attendance is mandatory and students must inform the teacher of any absence in advance. Students who miss more than two meetings will not be able to complete the course.
The first will meeting will be on Sept. 11 for the Monday group (online) and Sept. 19 for the Tuesday group (on campus).

Course aims: The seminars, which will be held on campus in both Uppsala and at Campus Gotland, will offer opportunities to practice speaking and listening skills in a supportive and encouraging environment. The goal of the course is to improve your fluency and help you feel more comfortable and confident presenting and speaking in English at university.
Target group: This course is primarily intended for free-mover students, rather than students who have come to the university through an exchange program. Students must be registered at Uppsala University (including Campus Gotland) in order to take the course.
Language prerequisites: There are no language prerequisites (apart from those necessary to be admitted to the university).
Course format: The course will be offered on weekday evenings on Mondays in Uppsala starting on Sept. 11, and Wednesdays and Thursdays at Campus Gotland starting on Sept. 28. The seminars will be held on campus only, and there is no Zoom/distance option for the speaking course.
